Planning a destination wedding in Punta Cana sounds like a dream! Beachside vows while barefoot in the sand, sunset photos and celebrating under the palm trees.

And then reality hits with logistics. Resort and venue options, the guest list, budget conversations and vendor timelines.

We’ve photographed hundreds of weddings here in the Dominican Republic, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned it’s that destination weddings are simpler than traditional weddings, but only if you plan them smartly.

We’ve fully updated our Punta Cana Wedding Checklist for 2026 and will guide you step by step from choosing your venue to your actual wedding day, so nothing important is missed.

How to Use This Punta Cana Wedding Checklist

Our years of experience working with couples planning destination weddings at resorts and private venues throughout Punta Cana has led us to creating this helpful guide. You don’t need to follow it perfectly; think of this as your planning roadmap while creating your own timeline.

You Got Engaged… Now What?

First things first, celebrate! You’re engaged, take a moment to enjoy it before jumping straight into logistics.

Once you’ve given it a chance to sink in, sit down with your partner and talk about what’s really important to each of you.

  • Do you want something intimate or a big celebration?
  • Are you imagining a resort wedding or an outside venue?

And the big one

  • What is a realistic amount that you’d be willing to spend?

Having these conversations early will make every decision that follows much easier.

Set a Budget

Destination weddings often surprise couples in a good way. Many find they get more value compared to a traditional hometown wedding, but you’ll still want to outline a clear budget from the start.

Here’s how we tell couples to tackle it:

  • Talk about money early. If families are chipping in, have that conversation upfront so there are no surprises later.
  • Prioritize what matters to you. Is it photography, your venue, the guest experience or décor? Knowing where you want to invest will help you make confident decisions as costs add up.
  • Be realistic. Flexibility and compromise will be your friends through this.

When creating your budget, be sure to include the following:

  • Venue and ceremony fees
  • Travel and accommodation
  • Wedding professionals (photography, videography, makeup, music, décor)
  • Guest-related expenses (welcome events, gifts, excursions)

Pick Your Resort or Wedding Venue

This is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make! Your venue choice will influence your budget, guest experience, and vendor options so take your time here and do some research. We recommend joining Facebook wedding groups for the resorts and venues you’re considering to connect with others who have , or are planning to marry there.

Choose a Wedding Date

When selecting your date, some things to consider are weather, travel costs, and your guests’ availability. Ask some of your must-have guests which months would be easiest for them to travel. Being flexible with dates ensures more of your friends and family are able to attend and can help you secure better rates as well.

All-Inclusive Resorts vs Outside Wedding Venues in Punta Cana

All-Inclusive Resorts

All-inclusive resorts are popular because they handle a lot of logistics for you. They take care of guest room blocks, provide in-house coordinators and offer package options. But let’s be honest, not all resorts are equal. Some resorts have strict outside vendor fees, limit decor customization or only allow certain ceremony times.

If you’re choosing a resort wedding in Punta Cana, be sure to ask their planner:

  • What are the outside vendor fees?
  • What time is sunset during our wedding month?
  • Is there a private reception option?
  • What is the rain backup space?

Off-Resort Venues

Off-resort venues like Kukua, Huracán, Pearl Beach Club, Jellyfish Restaurant, and many other venues across Punta Cana offer more flexibility. They’re not always easier but they are a lot more personalized. Their in-house teams know the local vendors, are more accommodating to special requests and can bring your vision to life so your special day feels like yours and not a template.

Apart from being able to really customize your wedding day, off-resort venues also offer more privacy. They are closed to the public for the day so you and your guests can enjoy their facilities without other tourists accidently wandering through. The only downside is you still need to decide where everyone will stay.

Whichever you choose, the best advice we can give is visit if you can. As with planning a wedding anywhere, being able to visit the venue, sample decor and food, and feel what your guests will experience is the best way to finalize your decision. It’s also a great opportunity for an engagement photoshoot you can use on your save-the-dates!

However, we understand the cost of this extra trip might not be in every couple’s budget and that’s ok. In this case, we definitely recommend you ask to do a video walkthrough with the venue or resort’s wedding planner.

Best Time of Year to Get Married in Punta Cana

Punta Cana is a year-round destination thanks to its warm climate, so really any time of year it’s beautiful here. That said, some months are more popular than others which can really affect what prices you’ll pay for rooms and flights.

  • December to April: Peak season with perfect weather but higher rates
  • May to August: Warmer temperatures, great light, and fewer crowds
  • September to November: Lower rates and quieter resorts, with a better chance of a tropical shower

An experienced local team will help you plan around weather patterns and sunset timing for the best possible experience. And they’ll always have a back-up plan just in case!

11 Months Before Your Wedding

Create a Guest List

Destination weddings tend to be more intimate which is part of the magic. As a general rule, expect about 60–70% of invited guests to attend a destination wedding. This percentage can vary depending on travel distance, cost, time of year, and how much notice guests receive.

Send save-the-dates as early as possible and create a wedding website to easily share information with guests. Once you have an estimated headcount, you can better plan accommodations, welcome events, and transportation.

Pro tip: Give guests a clear booking deadline for room blocks. If you don’t, half of them will wait until the last minute and stress you out.

Book Your Wedding Professionals

In Punta Cana, popular vendors book far in advance so it’s important to confirm the ones you want as early as possible. We’ve had couples inquire 4-5 months before their wedding just to discover most experienced vendors are already booked. So if there’s a specific team you would love to work with, don’t wait!

Key professionals to book early are:

  • Wedding planner or coordinator
  • Photographer and videographer
  • Hair and makeup artist
  • DJ or live music
  • Officiant/MC

Choosing the right wedding photographer in Punta Cana is especially important as someone local will understand  the lighting, timelines, venues and resorts, and weather patterns unique to the Dominican Republic.

Legal Requirements for a Wedding in Punta Cana

Most couples choose to enjoy a symbolic ceremony in Punta Cana and complete the legal process at home simply due to the extra time and paperwork involved. If you’re taking this route, then feel free to scroll on to the next section. But if you’re one of the many couples who are opting for a civil ceremony, then this section is for you!

If you want your wedding in Punta Cana to be legally recognized (not just symbolic), you’ll need to meet the Dominican Republic’s marriage requirements. Below is the most up‑to‑date info on what couples should expect when planning a civil (legal) wedding in Punta Cana in 2026.

Required Documents

  • Valid passports for both partners (plus copies)
  • Original birth certificates, apostilled
  • Notarized declaration of single status (or equivalent)
  • Divorce decree or death certificate if previously married
  • Legal entry stamp or tourist card

Note: All documents not originally issued in Spanish must be officially translated and legalized.

You will also need two adult witnesses (non‑family) and will have to submit copies of their passports as well, so if you’re planning to elope you’ll still have to invite a couple friends.

Timing & Logistics

Most planners and resorts require documents to be submitted weeks in advance for approval by the civil registry or appointed judge. Be sure to ask about current processing times so you know when is the latest you should send your documents to ensure they are received and processed on time. Include time for delays or paperwork issues, and always send via courier like FedEx, UPS or DHL.

Couples should plan to arrive in the Dominican Republic at least 3 business days before their civil ceremony to meet the officiant, review and finalize their paperwork.

Ceremony & Certificate

In the Dominican Republic, civil ceremonies are conducted in Spanish and translators are typically arranged by your wedding planner or resort. Your marriage certificate will also be in Spanish but you can have it translated and apostilized when registering your marriage in your home country.

Start Booking Rooms & Flights

If your save-the-dates were sent around the 11 month mark, then by now you should have received enough confirmations to start booking room blocks and looking at flight options for both yourselves and your guests.

For resort weddings, your on-site planner will assist you with room reservations. If your wedding will be held at an off-site venue, then you’ll want to speak with the resort’s groups department for room block sizes and rates. Depending on where everyone is traveling from, you may be able to book flight and room blocks together with group packages offered by all inclusive vacation companies and airlines.

6-7 Months Before Your Wedding

Plan Out Your Day

You will already have discussed in general the timeline for your day (ceremony, cocktail hour, reception), but here is where you’ll want to start thinking about specifics. This is the stage where your wedding day begins to take shape as you plan out the special moments you’d like to include. Here are some questions we recommend you ask yourselves while planning out your day:

  • Are there any cultural traditions you’d like to include in your day or symbolic moments like the sand unity ritual or a champagne toast immediately after walking back down the aisle?
  • Will you do a first look with each other, family or your bridal party?
  • For the reception, how would you like the celebration to unfold? Will you go straight into the first dance right after your arrival, or save it to start off the party later on? Who would you like to give a speech and will they be done before or after dinner?
  • Will you have a cake cutting, a garter and/or bouquet toss, or skip those traditions and just jump in the pool at the end of the night?

Many couples also choose to incorporate a special show or performance such as live music or a singer during cocktail hour, a live painter, and even fire twirlers or fireworks to end off the night. A favourite here is the Dominican Hora Loca (Crazy Hour) which includes dancers in colourful costumes and traditional attire dancing Merengue to liven the mood and get your guests out on the dance floor.

These additions can completely transform the atmosphere of your reception and create unforgettable memories for both you and your guests. If you are considering any of these options, be sure to get them booked with help from your planner, as the most sought-after performers often reserve dates well in advance.

Apart from your wedding day, think about the overall experience as well. Will you have a welcome dinner or maybe you want to do a trash the dress photoshoot? Destination weddings offer the opportunity to extend the celebration beyond just a few hours and many couples choose to incorporate additional events throughout the week.

If you plan on including any of these special moments, we recommend speaking with your photographer to ensure you’ve allotted enough coverage time to capture everything. A local professional will have plenty of experience with incorporating these events and the timing needed for each.

Check Passports

Specifically, check the expiration date on your passports! And be sure to send a reminder to all your guests to do the same. There’s nothing worse than being a couple weeks away from travel only to realize your passport is about to expire and now you have to pay more for the rush renewal service and pray it gets to you on time. A simple email update reminding guests to double check their passport expiration date can prevent unnecessary stress and last-minute complications. It is always best to renew early if there is any doubt, as passport processing times can be unpredictable.

As of December 2025, the Dominican Republic has relaxed the entry rules for travellers from Canada, the United States, England, the EU and many South American countries. The new rule simply states that these guests need only to have a passport valid for the duration of their stay. For others, the original regulations are still in place and state that passports must be valid for a minimum of 6 months, so double checking is even more important if you are traveling from anywhere not mentioned above. And despite the new rules, some airlines have their own policies so be sure to check their passport requirements as well.

4-5 Months Before Your Wedding

Finalize Details

This is when inspiration boards turn into confirmed selections and ideas become concrete plans. Work closely with your wedding planner to finalize decor, florals, food and drinks, and any special request you may have. If you’re having a resort wedding, ask about the location of getting ready suites, cocktail hour and reception spaces.

The more thorough you are at this stage, the more relaxed you will feel when you arrive in Punta Cana.

Schedule Arrival Appointments

If you are one of the many couples planning your destination wedding completely from afar, there are still some things you can do when you arrive before your wedding. We recommend scheduling these now and planning to arrive at least 5 business days before your wedding to complete appointments.

Some appointments you can schedule include walkthroughs of the spaces with your wedding coordinator, menu tastings if available, and your hair and makeup trial. Meeting in person with your planner to review layouts, confirm timelines, and visualize the flow of your day can provide a major peace of mind. Scheduling these appointments early in the week also allows you time to make small adjustments if needed, while still leaving space to relax and enjoy time with your guests before the big day.

The Little Things

Start thinking of and collecting the little things you’ll want to bring from home for your big day. Special mementos or small decor pieces, symbolic items, and photos if you’re having a photo table of yourselves through the years or loved ones lost and being remembered are all meaningful touches that deserve thoughtful preparation.

Gather any gifts for each other, your bridal party, family members, or even your guests. If you are planning welcome gift bags or wedding favors you should begin organizing those now. Speak with your wedding planner as they might be able to help you source products locally for welcome bags and wedding favors. Here are some ideas for welcome bag gifts you can purchase in Punta Cana, perfect for a destination wedding as well as saving yourself valuable luggage space:

  • Flip flops
  • Fans
  • Sunblock and aloe cream
  • Lip balm
  • Rum or mamajuana
  • Cigars
  • Dominican trinkets and souvenirs
  • Personalized beach bags

2-3 Months Before Your Wedding

Arrange Transportation

Your guests will be flying into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). It’s an easy airport, but sharing transportation options helps guests feel less overwhelmed. If everyone is arriving on the same flight, you can arrange for a large bus to pick your group up. Depending on your plans for the week, you may want to ask about a discount for hiring the bus for a few days to chauffeur your group around to activities and events.

If guests are arriving on different flights, smaller passenger vans, VIP black Suburbans, and even limousines are available. Providing clear transportation information ahead of time ensures a smooth arrival experience and sets the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable wedding week.

Plan & Book Activities

This is a great time to plan optional experiences for your guests, giving them a chance to connect and enjoy the destination beyond the wedding day. Popular excursion ideas in Punta Cana include:

  • Saona Island
  • Catamaran party boat cruises
  • Snorkeling or scuba diving adventures
  • A day at El Dorado Water Park
  • Ziplining at Scape Park
  • Golf at stunning courses such as La Cana and Punta Espada
  • Dominican cultural tours and rum tastings
  • Horseback riding and ATV tours

You do not need to organize every minute of your wedding week for your guests, but offering a few group options helps everyone feel included and excited about the full experience of celebrating in Punta Cana.

Review & Finalize Timelines

Meet with your wedding planner, officiant or MC, and photographer or videographer to review and finalize your timelines. Confirm things like vendor arrival times and how the reception will flow for speeches and the other special moments you have planned. Clarity now ensures confidence later!

Be sure to request IDs from all vendors and send them to your wedding planner to arrange access passes for them to get on property for your wedding day. This step is particularly important for resort weddings and is often overlooked until the last minute.

Start Packing

No, we’re serious! It’s time to start putting all The Little Things you’ve been collecting into the suitcase they’ll be traveling down with you in.

Starting now means you have plenty of time to double and triple check that you’ve packed everything you want and need for your special day. Wedding attire, accessories, vow books, gifts, decor items, and emergency supplies should all be organized early so you are not rushing in the final days before departure. Starting now means you have plenty of time to double and triple check that you’ve packed everything you want and need for your special day.

The Week of Your Wedding

Arrive in Punta Cana

Depending on what you’ve got planned in the lead up to your wedding day, we recommend arriving 3-5 business days in advance. Do any pre-wedding appointments within the first few days so you still have time to relax and have some fun with your guests before the big day.

Unpack your wedding attire and send it to be steamed. Review the items you’ve brought so you have time to purchase anything you may have forgotten. Arriving early allows you to settle in, adjust to the climate and any time difference, and begin enjoying the destination rather than feeling rushed.

Relax & Enjoy

This is when you let go of the checklist and trust the team you’ve hired. Once you arrive in Punta Cana, something shifts. The ocean air hits differently, your guests start arriving, the excitement becomes real and this is when couples finally realize why they chose a destination wedding in the first place.

The atmosphere here is relaxed in a way traditional hometown weddings rarely are. People are on vacation, not rushing home to relieve babysitters, so lean into that energy and enjoy the activities you planned with your guests in the stunning location you’ve chosen!
