If you’ve been daydreaming about turquoise water, swaying palm trees, and powdery white sand for your photoshoot in the Dominican Republic, you’re in good company. Punta Cana is one of the most popular destinations for weddings, engagements, family vacations, and couple’s getaways. But if you’ve done a little Googling recently, you may have stumbled across something called sargassum and wondered what it means for your beach photos.
The good news? Punta Cana sargassum is a natural, seasonal phenomenon and it doesn’t have to stop you from getting the gorgeous photos you’ve been envisioning. Let’s dive into what sargassum is, why it happens, and most importantly, how we work around it to make sure your photos look stunning no matter the season.

What Exactly Is Sargassum?
Sargassum is a type of floating brown seaweed that naturally grows in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in an area called the Sargasso Sea (hence the name). Unlike other seaweed that clings to rocks, sargassum floats freely thanks to tiny gas-filled “berries” that act like little balloons, keeping it buoyant.
For centuries, patches of sargassum have drifted across the Atlantic. Sailors even wrote about navigating thick mats of it back in the 1400s! In its natural habitat, sargassum is actually really important as it provides shelter for baby sea turtles, fish, crabs, and even migratory birds. It’s basically a floating nursery of marine life!
But in recent decades, the story has changed. What used to be occasional patches of seaweed has turned into massive seasonal blooms, especially in the Caribbean. And that’s where Punta Cana comes into the picture.

Why Has Sargassum Increased in Recent Years?
Several factors have contributed to the increase of sargassum washing up on Caribbean shores:
- Nutrients in the water: Agricultural runoff (fertilizers, waste) from rivers like the Amazon has added extra nutrients to the ocean, fueling sargassum growth.
- Warmer waters: Rising ocean temperatures give sargassum the perfect conditions to thrive.
- Changing currents: Shifts in wind and current patterns help carry larger mats of sargassum from the central Atlantic all the way to Caribbean coastlines.
The result? Some years bring more seaweed than others, but overall the trend has been upward. Punta Cana sees the heaviest sargassum season typically between April and September, with peaks in the summer months. Outside of those times, it’s much lighter, sometimes barely noticeable.

What’s Being Done About It?
The good news is that sargassum isn’t ignored. There are ongoing efforts both locally and globally to address it.
- Prevention at sea: In some areas, barriers or floating booms are installed offshore to block or redirect sargassum before it reaches the beaches.
- Beach clean-ups: Resorts and municipalities work daily to remove seaweed from popular beaches. You may see tractors or teams raking in the mornings.
- Repurposing projects: Scientists and entrepreneurs are finding ways to recycle sargassum into fertilizer, paper, and even building materials.
- Research & monitoring: Organizations track sargassum blooms by satellite to better predict when and where it will arrive.
So while it may sound overwhelming, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes to manage it. And most importantly it doesn’t mean the beaches are off-limits. People are still swimming, sunbathing and yes, taking beautiful photos every day.

Photoshoots During Sargassum Season
Here’s where our expertise comes in. At Punta Cana Photographer, we specialize in capturing stunning destination memories year-round, and sargassum season doesn’t change that. We’ve got plenty of tricks up our sleeve to make sure your photos look just as dreamy as you imagined.
1. Shooting Below the High Tide Line
Sargassum tends to collect in thick bands along the shoreline. By positioning you closer to the water, just below the high tide line, we can shoot past that seaweed line. This way, the ocean still sparkles behind you.
2. Using Palm Groves and Green Areas
Many beaches in Punta Cana aren’t just sand and sea, they also have palm trees, lush greenery, lagoons, and winding pathways. These spots make for incredibly romantic and tropical backdrops, completely unaffected by sargassum.
3. Creative Angles and Composition
We’re pros at framing. By angling the camera away from the water, shooting from higher up the beach, or even elevating our perspective, we can remove sargassum from the frame entirely. You’ll never know it was there.
4. Variety in Locations
We often use multiple spots, not just the main beach area when doing photoshoots. Courtyards, piers, gardens, and private coves all make stunning settings. Off-resort venues like Playa Macao offer diverse backdrops.
5. Editing Magic
While we aim to get everything perfect in-camera, a little post-production touch-up never hurts. If a stray patch of sargassum sneaks into the background, we can polish it out during editing.
The bottom line? Sargassum season doesn’t stop us from creating magazine-worthy photos. In fact, some of our favorite shoots have happened in the summer months when the light is golden and the beaches are quieter.

A Note of Reassurance
It’s natural to feel a little worried when you see headlines about sargassum, especially if you’ve booked your dream vacation in Punta Cana. But here’s the truth: it’s a seasonal event, it’s being actively managed, and with the right photographer, it doesn’t have to affect your photos at all.
Whether you’re planning a destination wedding, a family session, a maternity shoot, or a surprise proposal, we’ll guide you to the best spots, the best angles, and the best timing so your images are filled with joy, love, and the beauty of the Dominican Republic.
