Why Should You Plan an Extended Family Photoshoot?

Being together with your extended family in a paradise like Punta Cana is a rare and precious moment. Here are some compelling reasons to schedule a photoshoot:

  1. Preserve Priceless Memories: A family vacation is filled with laughter, love, and connection. These moments deserve to be captured and treasured for years to come. A professional photoshoot allows you to turn fleeting memories into lasting keepsakes.
  2. Celebrate Special Occasions: Whether you’re gathered for a destination wedding, a milestone anniversary, or a family reunion, an extended family photoshoot is the perfect way to commemorate the occasion.
  3. Strengthen Bonds: The experience of a group photoshoot is more than just taking pictures. It’s about connecting, sharing laughs, and enjoying each other’s company in a relaxed and beautiful setting.
  4. Create an Heirloom: Photos from an extended family photoshoot are not just for you but for future generations. They become a part of your family’s history, showcasing the love and togetherness you shared in such a picturesque destination.

How It Works: Logistics for Your Photoshoot

We understand that organizing a large family group can feel overwhelming, especially when you need to coordinate with multiple family members to get everyone on board and informed. We’re here to make it as simple as possible. Let me share with you a little bit about how this works and how we can get the best photos. You have two options for location.

Option 1: We Come to Your Resort

This option is great but can be a little tricky to get your resort’s cooperation before you arrive and can speak to someone in person. This makes it a little harder to plan ahead but certainly not impossible. We suggest trying to get a hold of your resort by email or phone call first to ask if this would be possible.

Most resorts in Punta Cana welcome outside photographers, but you will need to obtain permission. Some resorts require purchasing a day pass for the photographer’s entry. We’re happy to guide you through this process to ensure everything runs smoothly. We can even assist in calling your resort to speak with someone directly.

This option might be the most convenient as it lets you stay within the comfort of your resort while still capturing stunning group photos in a tropical paradise. This will save on transportation time and the logistical stress of having everyone ready and at the meeting point (usually the lobby) before getting picked up!

Option 2: Explore a Nearby Beach

Now, this option is actually what I would suggest for groups of 15 people or less. It is generally much easier to plan as you are not needing the cooperation or approval from your resorts (who can be tricky to communicate with). It can be less stressful as we plan every detail and the more adventurous option.

If you’d like a change of scenery, we will arrange transportation for your group to a nearby beach. Our trusted driver will come to pick up your group right from the lobby of your hotel. We are in communication with both the driver and you, usually via WhatsApp or iMessage to coordinate this step so that everything runs smoothly. This is an excellent way to explore Punta Cana beyond the resort.

Punta Cana is home to countless breathtaking beaches that serve as idyllic backdrops for your photoshoot. We mainly use Macao Beach as our preferred location which is only a short 20-30 minute drive from most resorts. It will all depend on where you are staying, we also use a private beach in Cabeza de Toro or if your group is staying inside Cap Cana, we like to use Juanillo Beach – All are amazing locations!

Both options provide flexibility and stunning results. Whether you prefer the familiarity of your resort or the adventure of exploring a new location, we’ll ensure your photoshoot is enjoyable and stress-free.

What to Wear for a Larger Family Group Photo

You are probably wondering how to coordinate outfits for a large group. You want to ensure everyone looks good and the photos turn out! It might seem challenging, but a little planning here will go a long way. Here are some tips from my experience that I think can help your group look polished and cohesive:

  • Choose a Color Palette: Select soft, complementary colors like pastels, neutrals, or ocean-inspired tones. These shades not only reflect the tropical beauty of Punta Cana but also ensure your photos remain timeless. You do not want one family wearing black and dark tones and another wearing light blues and neutral tones, it won’t look cohesive.
  • Mix and Match: Encourage family members to coordinate rather than match exactly. Mixing different shades within the same palette creates a coordinated yet individual look. I just wanted to mention here, that while matching t-shirts that say “Family Reunion 2025” is a cute idea, please refrain from using this in your photoshoot. It can come across as tacky in photos and is better saved for your excursion day off the resort.
  • Keep Patterns Minimal: While patterns can add personality, avoid using too many bold prints. A few subtle patterns across the group work well without overwhelming the photos. Please avoid graphics and big branded titles only your shirts altogether.
  • Comfort and Style: Punta Cana’s warm climate calls for lightweight, breathable fabrics. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and khakis are ideal options for staying comfortable while looking great. Denim can be a hit or a miss sometimes. It is harder to pull off for larger groups but if some members opt for lightweight medium to light-coloured denim pants then it can be done when paired with a neutral or pastel or even better, white top. Generally, I recommend avoiding this material altogether for larger group photos.
  • Footwear Choices: Barefoot is best (and easiest) for a natural and relaxed vibe. For those who prefer shoes, stick to neutral sandals or shoes that won’t sink into the sand. Avoid heels, running shoes, or anything dark and bulky.

A Recent Extended Family Photoshoot with a Magical Surprise

One of our recent extended family photoshoots involved two families whose son and daughter were dating and the families had been best friends for years! They traveled to Punta Cana together for a group vacation. Everyone enjoyed the session so much, the vibes were high, and we captured candid moments of their time together against the stunning backdrop of Macao Beach.

But what made this session truly unforgettable was a surprise proposal

Towards the end of the session, as the sun was setting over the turquoise waters, we asked the young couple to do their portraits by the water. Everyone else knew what was coming and was eagerly anticipating the moment. She was totally surprised! The reaction was priceless—tears of joy, cheers from the family, and a resounding “Yes!” It was a moment of pure magic that we felt privileged to capture. The father of the bride-to-be packed a few bottles of champagne and glasses so everyone could toast in celebration! I have no doubt, these photos will forever hold a special place in their family’s history.
