The wedding gown is the centerpiece of the wedding… The favorite part of the planning process. And something that little girls and grown women alike spend their lives dreaming about.
Choosing the right dress can be exciting, exhausting, exhilarating, and overwhelming. It is so important, there are even a couple TV shows dedicated to this process (Say Yes to the Dress, My Fair Wedding, I Found the Gown…).
You want to look great and you want to choose the right gown for your body, but you don’t know which dress is for you. With so many options, it can be hard to narrow it down. If you are reading our blog, then it probably means you have decided to get married in the Dominican Republic. This means you should not only be thinking about what dress will look good on your body, but also what dress will work with the sunny, sandy beach environment here in Punta Cana.
So let’s look at a few of the different bridal styles!
The Mermaid Dress
What dress can go better with your beach wedding theme in Punta Cana than one that makes you feel like a mermaid?
The mermaid wedding dress fits snugly around the chest, waist, and hips. It usually looks best on average height to tall brides and can make shorter brides look…short.
If you are “average” height and want to accentuate your bust, waist, and hips – and you feel comfortable in body-accentuating attire, then this may be the dress for you! If you are on the shorter side and are uncomfortable with your curves, then consider another style, like the A-Line gown.
The A-Line Dress
The magical A-Line gown… it looks fantastic on all women (like our gorgeous bride, Susann, above), and works especially well for plus-sized women.
The fabric is snug across the bust and waist and glides gracefully across the hips and butt, which helps conceal and shape in the most flattering, elegant, and vintage way possible.
It is hard to think of a body type that doesn’t look good in an A-Line gown. For these reasons, the A-Line is one of our favorites. It looks good anywhere too! Be it a ballroom or beachside, you can’t go wrong with this classic choice.
The Ballgown
The ball gown wedding dress is a timeless style. If you are into the princess look, then this may be the dress for you!
The fitted bodice and flowing skirt can be very flattering and it looks amazing on tall brides. This style also works great for brides with wider hips because the natural volume of the skirt covers possible problem areas.
This may not be the best choice for Punta Cana and the Caribbean though because it’s thick and heavy for the beach.
It might work in big resorts like Hard Rock Punta Cana because you can have your reception in a big air-conditioned ballroom like the ones located at Fillmore & Avalon to avoid melting in the warm weather.
The Sheath Gown
The sheath wedding dress is simple, sweet, and cool. It works great for beach weddings for a couple of reasons.
One reason is that it is much cooler than other gowns (such as the ball gown) due to the lack of layers. It can be similar to a sundress in appearance, which also goes along with your beach themed wedding.
Another reason is that it works great for both short and tall brides! The lines of the dress elongate the frame, so if you are petite and want to appear taller, then this is a good choice. Regardless of your height, this is a flattering choice and you are guaranteed to be comfortable at your wedding here in the DR.
Short Dress
The short wedding dress is definitely a fun and interesting choice for brides. It looks best on brides with great legs because most of the attention will be drawn there. This style would work great for Bavaro Beach and any of the locations you choose in the Dominican Republic.
The short skirt means you won’t have to worry about getting sand on your dress, and it will also mean that you will stay cooler! Also, you could feasibly wear the dress again at a future date!
Some brides worry about wearing a short dress because it is less traditional. Don’t worry about keeping it traditional, it’s your day! You can go short and look glam. Think Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe!
Final Thoughts
